Guinea-Bissau liegt an der westafrikanischen Küste zwischen
Senegal und Guinea. Zum Staatsgebiet gehören auch die vorgelagerten Inseln des
Archipelago dos Bijagos.
Der erste Teil des Landesnamens leitet sich vermutlich von dem Berberwort aguinaoui
("schwarz") ab, der zweite Teil, der Name der Hauptstadt, wurde zur
Unterscheidung vom größeren Nachbarland Guinea gewählt.

Nationalfahne
Die Fahne von Guinea-Bissau ähnelt der von Kapverden.
Das hat damit zu tun, daß beide Fahnen auf die Partido
Africano da Independencia da Guine e Cabo
Verde (PAIGC,
Afrikanische Partei für die Unabhängigkeit von Guinea und
Kap Verde) zurückgehen, der Befreiungsbewegung, die die
Unabhängigkeit für beide Länder durchgesetzt hat.
Durch das Gelb wird die Sonne symbolisiert,
während Grün für die Hoffnung steht. Der schwarze
Stern repräsentiert die Einheit Afrikas.
Nationalwappen
Der Spruch bedeutet übersetzt "Eingkeit,
Kampf, Fortschritt".
Nationalhymne
Guinea-Bissaus Hymne, geschrieben 1963, wurde 1974
anläßlich der Unabhängigkeit angenommen. Texte und Melodie stammen von Amilcar
Lopes Cabral.
