Portugal liegt an der Westküste der Iberischen Halbinsel, im
Südwesten Europas, zwischen dem Atlantischen Ozean und Spanien. Zu seinem Territorium
gehören die Atlantikinseln Madeira und die Azoren.
Der Landesname entwickelte sich aus dem römischen Namen Portus
und Cale - Siedlungen nahe dem heutigen Porte.

Nationalhymne
Hino da Carta Constitucional war die
erste Hymne Portugals, sie wurde im Mai 1834 angenommen und wurde bis zur Ausrufung der
Portugiesischen Republik 1910 in Gebrauch. Sie wurde 1822 vom Kronprinzen Pedro von
Bragança (dem spätere Kaiser Pedro I. von Brasilien) geschrieben.
1910 wurde A Portugesa (Die
Portugiesische) trat ab 1910 in Kraft. Der Text wurde 1890
von Henrique Lopes de Mendonça verfasst, die Musik komponierte der Sohn
deutsch-französischer Einwanderer Alfredo Keil.
A Portuguesa wird in der portugiesischen Verfassung (Artikel 11, § 2) als
Nationalhymne bestimmt.
