Peru liegt gewissermaßen auf dem Rücken der Anden an der Westküste Südamerikas. Der Name entstammt der Ketschuasprache und bedeutet "Üppigkeit". Er erinnert an die einstige Pracht und den Glanz des Inka- und des spanischen Reiches. Die schwierigen geographischen Bedingungen behindern die Entwicklung Perus zu einem modernen Staat.

Das Tier ist ein Vicuria, ein Lama, welches den Tierreichtum Persu darstellen soll. Rechts davon siehst Du einen Chinarindenbaum für die Pflanzenwelt des Landes, das Füllhorn darunter steht für die Bodenschätze Perus.

Nationalhymne

Durch die Anführer des Kampfes um die Unabhängigkeit des Landes, José de San Martín und Simón Bolívar, wurde 1821 ein Wettbewerb für eine Nationalhymne ausgelobt. Diesen Wettbewerb hat Marcha Nacional (Nationalmarsch) gewonnen. Verschiedentlich wird für die Hymne auch die erste Zeile als Titel angeführt: Somos libres, seámoslo siempre (Wir sind frei, lasst uns so für immer bleiben), dies ist jedoch nicht der offizielle Name.

Erstmals wurde die Hymne am 24. September 1821 im Stadttheater von Lima aufgeführt und am 15. April 1822 als Nationalhymne angenommen. Es dauerte aber noch bis zum Jahr 1913, in welchem das Lied auch offiziell den Status der Nationalhymne erhielt.

1869 wurde der Text (José de la Torre Ugarte) leicht modifiziert, die Musik stammt von José Bernardo Alzedo.

Largo tiempo el peruano oprimido

y quebrar ese cetro que España
reclinaba orgullosos en los dos.

Lima, cumple ese voto solemne,
y, severa, su enojo mostró,
al tirano impotente lanzando,
que intentaba alargar su opresión.
A su esfuerzo saltaron los grillos
y los surcos que en sí reparó,
le atizaron el odio y venganza
que heredera de su Inca y Señor.

Compatriotas, no más verla esclava
si humillada tres siglos gimió,
para siempre jurémosla libre
manteniendo su propio esplendor.
Nuestros brazos, hasta hoy desarmados
estén siempre cebando el cañón,
que algún día las playas de Iberia
sentirán de su estruendo el terror.

Excitemos los celos de España
Pues presiente con mengua y furor
Que en concurso de grandes naciones
